  • Notes Domino Templates Get Slated for an Update. Here’s the Roadmap

    Bill Malchisky  October 3 2016 12:05:00 AM
This is the first of two roadmap posts I authored for release this week. Beyond my post last month where I covered lightly that templates would be upgraded, Barry Rosen provided an updated roadmap with two slides covering just Notes Domino Templates. For simplicity, I copy-pasted the prose from the first slide to make it searchable, and appended the time table slide for the second. Nice to see some progress here too. Nice to see that they are filling in the hole created previously from multiple areas.

    Templates Roadmap

    * The templates would be posted in Fix Central and not packaged with the fix pack installer.
    * You will be able to optionally download them to upgrade templates
    * Template releases would be aligned to the next closest fix pack release
    * Only templates which have changes would be released
    * The changes would need to include fixes needed for corresponding core/java [sic] fixes in the Notes fix pack.
    * There will be one zip file for English and another for multi languages (possible one each for G1,G2 and G3 languages) posted.

I guess as customer I have been asking for updated templates for the last 8 years.

Why does IBM open source the templates via GitHub so people can fork them and improve them?

Simple the statement "the templates get updated" is not sufficient. There should be a constant discussion about the templates (knowledge of the crowd).

And there is an enormous backlog if you look at the ideation on ideajam (if that is still up in the air).

So with whom is doing IBM these conversation about what should go in and what not?

Hi Patrick - I appreciate your thoughts. In my opinion, I suspect that because you --- and others --- have asked for this update, that is why it is finally occurring. It may not be completely what we want, but the cadence of change is happening and IBM is attacking it from multiple angles. Yes, a long time coming and I hope they continue down this path.

What I do know from my conversation is that the changes will not be cosmetic, but design related. So more workflow or structural is my guess. They are creating a list of what is possible in the time line committed.

Finally, I concur on the IdeaJam list which I suspect is still available, but closed to edits.

That is all I know for now. Thanks for the comment.

    Patrick,

I am a bit confused, the templates are not locked down and anyone can edit and customize the templates.

Could you please confirm if the term "corresponding core/java [sic] fixes in the Notes fix pack" does mean "Notes" and not "Domino"?

While IBM are silent on application modernisation, many are looking at the templates announcement in the context of where IBM see the future for application development on the platform. "Notes" implies a client UX, which doesn't fit with the message IBM have given about modernisation for Verse, which is web only. Investing resources in client template development when application development has been in abeyance for so long may also cause a degree of dismay.

Hi Paul - I have a blog post on the application development future going out early tomorrow. You should see it when you get ready for work in the morning, +- a few minutes.

Paul - Check that... one more day of a delay. A big meeting tomorrow on that topic, and the vendor seeks message accuracy--which I can respect.

Dev roadmaps are definetly hard to get in Domino World these days :-)
